' A recently approved biomarker test can help pinpoint which patients are at highest risk for preeclampsia, which is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in Georgia. Champions of the test hail it as a life-saving tool that takes the guesswork out of identifying which patients are developing the hypertensive disorder that only occurs during and after pregnancy. But access to the test may still be limited, partly because it is a relatively new tool in the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved biomarker testing for preeclampsia last year, though the test has been used for nearly a decade in Europe.' #maternalmortality #preeclampsia

The mother's raceis a big factor, but when one looks further the "Culture" or place of birth of blackmother's specifically reveal more orperhaps open more questions."that increase poor health outcomes. While we didn’t specifically look at the impact of structural racism on health in this study, it may also play a role here. Black women who were born outside the U.S. but immigrated to the country recently may be somewhat protected from the effects of discrimination because they tend to settle in immigrant-concentrated residential areas with increased social support,” Sharma added. In the study, medical records and other information on a total of 6,069 women were analyzed. The average age of participants was 27.5 years, and subjects self-identified as Hispanic (2,400, with 76.8% born outside the U.S.), Black (2,699, with 40.5% born outside the U.S.) or white (997, with 22.2% born outside the U.S.). All women had single-child deliveries at the Boston Medical Center from October 1998 to February 2016. The overall prevalence of preeclampsia among all women was 9.5%. Black women had the highest age-adjusted prevalence of preeclampsia (12.4%) compared with Hispanic (8.2%) and white women (7.1%).https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org

Great article out of Australia about preterm birth and the definition of 'early term' between 37-39 weeks and how those last couple week are still vital for development. Dr Vernon said a common misconception they hoped to address with the program was the idea that a baby had reached full term at 37 weeks gestation."That's an idea that has been around for more than 100 years, but what we now know is that the baby's brain develops much more powerfully if they're born two weeks later at 39 weeks of pregnancy," she said. #preemie #nicu #pretermbirth

Skin-to-skin has endless benefits for our patients and their parents. However, the timing varies from facility to facility. I stress the importance of developing technique to have parents perform skin-to-skin as soon as possible and in patients that are critical. It will take a team to do so safely, but it is such an important gift you can provide for families. Where there is a will there is a way! Don't let fear stop you from developing a team to help parents perform this 1st. :) See Cedars-Sinai's article below. #preemie #nicu #skintoskin #kanagaroocare

Beautiful artwork reflecting the anguish and journey of our families in the NICU and the life saving donations of breastmilk. I was really touched by the stories. If you stop for a minute, you are reminded of the amazing environment we work in and the humanity we witness every day. #preemie #nicu #breastmilk

'Necessity is the mother of invention.' I always enjoy hearing stories of former preemies paying it back. Hypothermia is a very serious problem for this population, especially in areas of the globe that lack the equipment required to maintain temperatures. Bravo to Warmilu! #preemie #nicu #temperature

Gone are the days of the NICU staff being the 'gate keepers' to the infants in our care. Our job as the experts is to encourage our parents to become the experts on their babies while in the NICU. We truly are partners in care. We should encourage, empower and celebrate with them as we prepare them for the journey and eventual discharge. The program in the article below is called 'Merge.' #nicu #preemie #familycenteredcare "For newborns, having their parents involved in their care early on strengthens the parental bond, supports healthy brain development andstabilizes their overall health, according to Health P.E.I."

I often get asked what I actually do. I work for Philips Clinical Professional Services and I conduct the Preemie for a Day workshop. I absolutely love traveling around the country to different NICUs and interacting with staff. I also enjoy inspiring staff to make changes in their care that leads to more positive outcomes. It's such a fun class that includes both lecture and hands on that has lasting effects. If you are dedicated to providing education to your staff that makes a difference, this class if for you! Would love to discuss this further. #preemie #nicu #CEUs

Yesterday I posted about zero separation. How do we get there? See the NICU design below. By keeping parents in the same room, we not only decrease separation but also, assist in the parents becoming 'experts' in their infant's care by designing a comfortable and inviting environment. Win-win. #preemie #nicu
