What are my chances of getting into a genetic counseling program? ›

Due to the limited number of programs and increasing interest in the field, acceptance rates for genetic counseling graduate programs are less than 8% (NSGC). This number is intimidating; however, it is further motivation for students to strengthen their resumes and applications.

The following percentage of all babies have an abnormality: 0.5% have a chromosomal disorder. 1% have a single-gene disorder. 1% have a disorder caused by defects in several genes.

How Do Genes Pass From Parent to Child? To form a fetus, an egg from the mother and sperm from the father come together. The egg and sperm each have one half of a set of chromosomes. The egg and sperm together give the baby the full set of chromosomes.

Several studies suggest genetics is difficult because it contains many abstract concepts (i.e. concepts that cannot be seen directly and are beyond our senses). Many abstract concepts exist at the molecular level, such as 'genes' and 'DNA', since this level includes invisi- ble concepts.

Q: How is genetic testing performed? A: Genetic testing is most commonly performed with a blood draw. For some individuals with a prior history of hematologic (blood) cancers, a blood sample may not be acceptable.
